The diary and letters of British officer Lieutenant- Colonel The Hon. Charles Stuart (26th Regiment of Foot) records Stuart’s observations about military operations in Rhode Island during the summer of 1778. An officer with service elsewhere in the American colonies during the war, Stuart recorded his experiences and detailed observations regarding activities afloat and ashore, especially on Aquidneck Island. Transcribed and presented with extensive annotation and supplemental letters, the work presents a colorful eyewitness account of the course of the revolution in one part of New England. The diary is an important document for understanding events in Rhode Island during the War for American Independence as well as presenting an insider’s view of military life and operations during the conflict.

About the Author:

Professor John B. Hattendorf, D.Phil., D.Litt., University of Oxford, is senior advisor at the U.S. Naval War College’s eponymous John B. Hattendorf Center for Maritime Historical Research and Ernest J. King Professor Emeritus of Maritime History. Additionally, he is the Historian of the Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution serves as Historian of the Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars and Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than fifty volumes, including the four-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History (2007).
