About Johan Af Klint, PH.D.

Johan af Klint (1939) has a PhD in religious history with concentration on Buddhism at the Stockholm University (2021). His professional education encompasses the Civilekonom examination at the Stockholm School of Economics, a MA examination at the Stockholm University and a MBA at the University of California, Berkeley.

He has worked in finance in the Far East, in Europe, in the USA and in Sweden. He was involved in the establishment of the Asian Development Bank in Manilla and in a new merchant bank in London, as well as in the reoganization of the Svenska Handelsbanken unit in New York. He has also established and ran the financial departments of the LM Ericsson Group and of the Svenska Petroleum AB. Finally, he has established and ran one of the first Venture Capital companies in Sweden.

Her research, as outlined in her dissertation “Transcending Dichotomies: Hilma af Klint’s Confluence of Science and Spiritualism in Atom and the Tree of Knowledge,” examines the symbolic visual language in af Klint’s work and its connections to the intersections of art, science, and spiritualism. As a scholar, she is committed to amplifying the contributions of historically overlooked artists, particularly women whose voices have been marginalized in art history. By combining studio practice and art historical analysis, her work highlights af Klint’s innovative approaches and their broader cultural significance.
